LaBarge + Partners to spend 29 hours on Leap Day branding one lucky local non-profit!

LaBarge+Partners, a local creative agency, has a unique (and mad) idea: donating its services to local non‐profits in need of advertising. No sleeping and no breaking for 29 hours straight – for free.
After a two-week application period, which ends February 24, LaBarge+Partners will choose the most deserving local non-profit and embark on a 29‐hour creative blitz. At the end of the 29 hours, LaBarge+Partners will reveal a fully integrated marketing plan (logo design, website, Public Relations strategy, media plan, stationary package, social media programs, etc.).

LaBarge+Partners is offering this service free of charge, using Leap Day as an opportunity to give back to a non‐profit that supports the Charleston community.

Nonprofits with 501(c)3 status can apply online. The winner will be announced Monday, February 27 at 9 a.m. with 29Madness kick‐off taking place on Wednesday, February 29 at 12:01 a.m.

Now is the time! Support an increase in the Arts Commission’s base appropriation

The budget process proceeds in the House next week when the subcommittees of the House Ways & Means Committee make their budget recommendations for the various state agencies. The Arts Commission’s budget recommendation will be made by the subcommittee members, including the Subcommittee Chair: Representative Chip Limehouse. The full House Ways & Means Committee is scheduled to meet February 21-23 to deliberate the budget.

What can you do? While H.4697 and S.1210 are pending bills and would provide an alternative means of funding the Arts Commission, we feel it important at this point in the process to seek additional general fund dollars for the Arts Commission as it is currently funded. If you are a constituent of one of the representatives listed below, please contact them and ask them to support an increase in the Arts Commission’s base appropriation. Let the following legislators know that the arts mean business in South Carolina:

The Employees Community Fund of The Boeing Company (known as ECF or the Fund) is a unique employee-owned and directed giving program that allows employees to support the needs of their local communities via tax-deductible recurring payroll deductions or one-time gifts. More than 4,000 nonprofit organizations benefit each year from the average $31 million in employee contributions each year.

Calling all artists… Knology announces Design Contest!

Knology is looking for a new poster design for the 2012 Pajama Run which will take place in November. All proceeds from the race benefit MUSC Hollings Cancer Center for research on cancers found below the waist including ovarian, testicular, prostate, bladder, and colorectal cancers. The Contest

Submit your artwork for a chance to become the 2012 Pajama Run poster design winner. All media is accepted. The winner will receive a $500 prize and a $500 donation to the charitable organization of their choice. Entry into the competition is free. To enter, complete the entry form to be submitted with artwork. All entries must be received by 5pm on July 27th, 2012.

Entries should consist of the following:
1. Completed entry form. (attached to this email)
2. Winner to be reproduced & printed by 4-color process. Overall size should not exceed 36×36 inches. Suggested is 24×36 and mounted on foam core. Artwork may be e-mailed along with an entry form.

“Theatre Charleston Awards” to recognize excellence in Charleston’s theatrical community

Theatre Charleston is thrilled to announce the creation of the “Theatre Charleston Awards”. These awards will work to recognize excellence in theatrical performance, production, and design in the Charleston area. Our community boasts some of the most talented actors, directors, and designers in the Southeast. The Theatre Charleston Awards give us the opportunity to highlight and thank them for their excellent work and, more importantly, create awareness and visibility for Charleston’s outstanding and diverse theatre community.

Theatre Charleston is seeking patrons, artists, educators, and journalists with the critical thinking skills to effectively rate all areas of a production. If you or someone you know is interested in being a part of the first “Theatre Charleston Awards” voting body, please download the “Theatre Charleston Award Voter Application” here. Details on the requirements and responsibilities of voters can be found within the application. All questions should be directed to Emily Wilhoit at (843) 813-8578 or emily@theatrecharleston.com. FAQs
-Who will see my votes?
Voting will be done online and will be kept strictly confidential. Final review and tally of the votes will be done by an outside firm or group.

-If I am selected as a voter, will I still be eligible to win a Theatre Charleston Award?
Yes! Voters may participate in as many eligible productions as they like. Voters cannot vote on productions they have participated in. This includes acting, directing, producing, designing, building or volunteering to assist with a production in any way.

-I will be out of town for part of the year next season. Am I still eligible to be a voter?
Yes. As it states in the voter application, voters must see a minimum of 8 shows at a minimum of 5 different theatres. Voters are in no way expected to see every eligible production, but are encouraged to see as many as possible.

Annex Dance Company announces second installment of Cocktails and Conversation

On Tuesday February 28, 2012, Annex Dance Company will host the second installment of Cocktails and Conversation with Annex Dance Company at Spirit Moves (445 Savannah Hwy). The evening will begin at 6pm with hors d’oeuvres, beverages, and delicious cupcakes donated by Cupcake! Enjoy a lecture/demonstration style performance showcasing works for the spring season, including a new work with musicians Jonathan Kammer and Wendy Tahara. $15 donation (cash or check) with all of the proceeds going directly towards rehearsal costs. The Alliance is a proud member of the South Carolina Association of Non Profit Organizations (SCANPO) whose mission is to “serve, support and strengthen nonprofits for a better South Carolina.” On February 28-30 the organization will be fulfilling this objective by presenting their 2012 Nonprofit Conference at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, SC. They have pulled together an outstanding agenda with presentations by some of the nation’s top nonprofit leaders, plus sessions led by SC’s best and brightest. These are ideas so inspiring you won’t be able to wait to get back home to share them with our arts community. 12th Annual Kiawah Island Art and House Tour to benefit the Gibbes Museum of Art Slated for April 13

The 12th annual Kiawah Island Art and House Tour, sponsored by the member auxiliary group Gibbes, etc., will take place on Friday, April 13, 2012, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. This year, five stunning Kiawah Island homes in the private gated community will be opened for public viewing. Proceeds from the event benefit education, exhibition, and outreach programs at the Gibbes Museum of Art.

“The women of Gibbes, etc. do so much for the museum and our community. Since 2001, the Kiawah Art and House Tour has raised over $1 million for the Gibbes. We are so grateful to the members of Gibbes, etc. as well as the sponsors and the families who open up their homes for this special event. I encourage everyone to attend the Tour and see first-hand the gorgeous houses and their unique art collections,” said Angela Mack, Executive Director of the Gibbes Museum of Art.

Descriptions of the Five Kiawah Island Homes

House 1 – This contemporary home provides remarkable views of Kiawah’s Blue Heron Pond. The striking entrance is enhanced by the openness of the floor plan and the exposed steel beams that contrast with the rich woods of the crown molding and ceiling. The Great Room is warm and inviting with textured grass cloth walls, North Carolina blue stone fireplace, and automated shade system for the 30-foot high glass window. The owners’ art collection is as unique as the architecture of the home.

House 2 – This shingle style, three-story home has expansive views of Bass Creek, the marshes, and ocean. The house is full of light and color and boasts an impressive collection of Russian Art. Every room has a distinct personality and ties into the beautiful Russian art collection. A painting by Russian artist Popenko inspired the décor of the majestic master bedroom that overlooks the creek and marshes. The third floor Gathering Room showcases the impressive ocean views.

House 3 – Located in the Summer Islands enclave, a sweeping staircase welcomes guests into this classic shingle style house. Floor to ceiling windows in the Great Room offer visitors a stunning view of the creek, marsh, Bass River, and beyond. The artwork, featuring scenes of the Lowcountry, perfectly complements the interior. The home is designed for entertaining with a beautiful interior bar and wine cellar, as well as an outdoor kitchen area that flanks the pool and cascading falls.

House 4 – As you enter this light-filled home, there are floor to ceiling windows and French doors that open to a spectacular view of beach grasses and trails that lead to the ocean. The owners have selected a palette of blue and white throughout the house that gives a classic style to this coastal home. There are endless views of the ocean from almost every room and the impressive art collection graces the walls throughout the house.

House 5 – Guests first pass through an iron and concrete front gate to a modern falling water fountain and sculpture garden. As guests ascend the stairs toward the living area, they see a sculpture collection placed strategically inside and outside the home through spacious windows overlooking the marsh. The home was built skyward to embrace an exceptional contemporary and traditional art collection. The homeowners have beautifully incorporated family pieces dating back to the 17th century into this tastefully designed home.

Tickets, available beginning February 15, are $55 per person and include the five-house tour, light refreshments throughout the afternoon at one of the homes, and an admission pass to the Gibbes Museum of Art valid through December 30, 2012.
